Where do I begin. Well first let me begin by stating that I am sharing my personal experience and not everyone's experience is the same so please don't take this as medical advice as I am not a licensed professional, I just know what is best for me.

Paragard IUD Rusted inside my uterus for 7 years and during that time I have experienced persistent vaginal odors, chronic yeast infections, and general vaginal discomfort, not to mention painful cramping that traveled to my legs even when I was not on my period, back pains, and fatigue.

I decided to get the Paragard IUD after I had my second child. At the time all I knew about it was that it was hormone free and lasts for up to 10 years. I liked the convenience of it and was given very little information about any type of side effects. Fast forward 3 years later I had sexual relations and shortly after had a fishy odor that would not go away. I got it all checked out but my gyno could not find anything wrong so I did a lot of online searching and douched away with peroxide (not recommended) only to later get a yeast infection. I stopped douching because I realized that I was washing away the good bacteria along with the bad which made things worst after awhile. I visited the gyno yet again but still he did not find anything and everything came back normal. STDs ruled out, not even a yeast infection was detected even though I had all the symptoms such as cottage cheese discharge, and itching so I again was left on my own to figure it out on my own.

After countless hours of research, I decided to make a lifestyle change and eliminated sugar, meat, dairy, and starch out of my diet and started to research many herbs and natural ways to stay balanced and healthy. This change has served me well and I have been able to keep things in control with the help of special herbs & oils, & probiotics such as burdock root, oregano oil capsules, Primadophilus Reuteri, & many more.

I would still occasionally get the odor and yeast infections but they would subside when I ate specific things like raw garlic with spinach, tomatoes, lemon juice with olive oil along with my special mixture of herb tea that I make. Then I started to research the possibility of the IUD being the cause of my vaginal issues and to my surprise, I've ran across countless women online sharing their bad experiences with it and many having the same symptoms as I did. Some women even pulled out their IUD on their own, though I opted to schedule an appointment to have mines removed instead. And that is exactly what I did today! I got mine removed, and could not be happier! I asked my gyno to place my IUD in a ziploc bag so I can examine it when I get home. I got home, rinsed it and smelled it, and its no surprise that it smelled like fish! And when I wiped it off gently, particles of rusty stuff rubbed off on the napkin! And I'm thinking wow, how could this rotten rusty device be healthy for anybody to have inside them? I can't believe it is allowed. For 7 years this rotting rusty device has been in my uterus causing me odors and yeast infections, gee no wonder! I couldn't be more happy to have it out of me, especially seeing how the particles are loose and easily wipes off on a napkin. Such a shame. I just wanted to share this information with others so that people can make informed choices.

It has served its purpose of preventing unwanted pregnancy, but never will I use this kind of birth control again nor would I recommend it.

If gynecologists fully informed you of the side effects along with informing you of the eventuality of the copper IUD rusting while inside you, would you agree to do it anyway? I know I would have not.

  1. Queen, I am so happy to find this blog post. I have recently had my own shocking Paraguard removal experience and have yet to find anyone (other than you) that shares it.

I have had EVERY symptom you list for several years. The nearly constant BV (which I actually solved by switching to a Diva Cup), the stabbing pains that felt like someone was shoving a Ginsu knife into my cervix and twisting it, the sharp pains that ran from pubic bone to the inside of my calf, bleeding, bleeding, and more bleeding, spotting mid-cycle, 14-day periods, bloating, cramping, post-sex bleeding, pain during sex, you name it. It was a nightmare.

When my IUD was removed, it was missing over 2/3 of the copper wires. The remaining coils were loose, falling apart, and decaying. I have no idea where all the copper has gone, but I suspect that a fair amount is trapped inside the tissues of my uterus and cervix. This thing came out hard - my doctor said it felt like of like pulling out a rusty nail. Her exact words. And, having pulled a rusty nail out of my own foot, I believe she described it well. It was almost as though it was grabbing at my insides the whole way out. It hurt like hell!

I am now free of the constant pain and bleeding and am so glad I had it removed. I'm also glad I didn't listen to my doctor when she told me that some studies say Paraguard is effective up to 20 years.... Ugh...It would have completely disintegrated by then.

    1. Thank you for sharing! I'm glad you found relief from it. I got pregnant a couple of months after mine was removed, and am looking forward to my meeting my new bundle of joy this summer.

    2. I had the IUD inserted on April 7, 2017 and just short of two months I started having this weird fishy smell in my vagina!! I new it had to be the copper IUD. Prior to that I always had great hygiene. I never had odors. I immediately made an appointment with my GYN. I was about 6 weeks post insertion so I was actually due anyway for ultrasound to check to see if IUD is still in place. The ultrasound revealed that my Uterus started to eject the IUD. My doctor had to pull it out because it was half way out my cervix. When he smelled the IUD he said the smell from my vagina seems like it could be coming from the IUD. But just to be certain he took a culture so I am waiting for my results. This was not a good experience for me. The IUD is not for everybody. I only chose it b/c I am a type 1 diabetic and wanted to stay away from hormonal birth control.

    3. Thank you for sharing! I'm happy to report that after 3 years since having mines removed, I have not had any odor or vaginal issues at all. It's a shame that they don't share these potential side effects to help women make informed choices.

  2. Amazing story. I have been doing much research on my own recently as I have been having chronic bv and yeast infections since June of this year. I had a copper IUD put in a year ago this October. Aside from all of the immense pain it has put me through (on and off my period) I feel like my symptoms of bv have been getting worse, leading to the yeast infections as well. I'm calling a GYNO tomorrow and hopefully having this this removed next week. I am hopeful this will stop the madness. Any ladies with other successful removal stories who got their life back?

  3. Thanks for your post. Hopefully all goes well with your gyno visit but if not I can share what worked for me. My gyno prescribed metro gel and it gave me the worst yeast infection ever & made things worse. I then read another bloggers story about her bv & she used clotrimazle cream and it worked for her. I tried it and it has been a lifesaver and I keep it stocked! I used the 7 day treatment & it works in a couple of days. Not only did I get yeast infection relief after 5 years of suffering, it also cleared my bv and I had no more odor after my first time using it. It's worth the try. Average cost is $7.

  4. Thank you for that information. I have an appointment for the removal this Wednesday. I hope that my body can bounce back to normal soon after that. I have tried antifungal and antibacterial creams in the past, only to have them provide some "relief" but no cure. I can try the clotrimazle cream that you suggested. Are you still suffering from bv and yeast infections? Or have they stopped since the removal of your IUD? Thanks again for all your help and your brave post.

    1. I am happy to report that I have been bv & yeast free since giving birth 3 months ago. I did use the clotrimazle cream during pregnancy because I would get yeast infections whenever I ate sweets. I haven't had any problems since then.

    2. Bv was gone the first week of use. I used the clotrimazle off and on for approximately 3 months during my last trimester only when I ate sugar.

  7. I had mine for 5 years and about a year or two ago I started having the same exact issues. I put on a rubber gloves and yanked that suckered out an hour ago. Slid right out. I already feel better. It wasn't as bad looking good as yours, but still pretty corroded. It would be ok if they put a two year expiration date on these things. Ew.

    1. Good for you What a brave decision to remove it yourself successfully. I did try to remove mine but it was difficult for me and I was worried about the possibility of it breaking. Now I'm in search of natural birth control alternatives although my current breastfeeding is a temporary form of birth control.

  8. I'm sorry to heat that Amelia, but I'm also glad you had yous IUD removed. You are brave for doing it yourself and super lucky for no complications. I had mine out last Wednesday and have not experienced any pain since. I'm still waiting to get my period and hopefully it will feel normal, which I've almost forgotten what normal feels like. As for treating my bv and yeast, I found an amazing site. If you are interested you can buy their $6 ebook and start the treatment plan if you feel necesssary. This might help you too Queen. I feel I need to be aggressive for a while to treat my bv. Please check out their website as you will be very impressed. Good luck ladies. www.allthingsvagina.com

  9. Queen, breastfeeding is NOT, I repeat, NOT a temporary reprieve from pregnancy! I actually am a mother of three - the last two conceived while breastfeeding! But, admittedly, my period came back right away... After my third born, I had the Paraguard implanted and I can't handle the smell. It's like walking around with a carcass in my pants. It's embarrassing and humiliating. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm more convinced than ever it's because of this IUD and I want it out!

  12. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I got the paragard placed 2 months after I had my 2ND baby boy via c-section. I myself, just like you and many others, have constant vaginal fishy order, I wear a tampon almost all the time to contain it (and even that doesn't help that much I still wash 1-2 times a day), If I don't wear a tampon I have to go to the bathroom three or four times a day just to wash my private area, so I don't reek like stink bate (I'm a stay at home mom) and I also leak this clear fluid. I'm sure other people would be able to smell me if I didn'the wash so often, and even when I do wash it doesn't help when my partner and I want to have sex; it is very embarrassing when I try to be intimate with him, and we have to stop in the middle of every thing so I can go wash myself. Aside from the fishy odors I've had constant spotting for the last 3 1\2 months after I got it placed 4 months ago, and when the spotting stopped thats when I started noticing the clear liquid(the smell of the liquid makes me gag) and I have not had my period for since having it placed, just spotting. I did talk with my general practitioner, and she said that copper IUD can cause a hormone imbalance, and this is probably why I haven't had my period and have had hot flashes, the way to fix this I would have to go on birth control pills, Witch completely defeats the purpose of having a non hormonal IUD.I have constant cramps, pain during intercourse, gained 20 pounds (in 5 months),hot flashes,I smell like stink bate, and I'm positive I can feel it in my uterus because any pressure on the outside of my lower stomach makes it very uncomfortable. I will be getting it removed ASAP,and until my partner get a vasectomy we will be using condoms, we have two beautiful boys and our family is complete I thought the IUD would be a great option because it's long lasting and non hormonal, I was wrong. Doctors should warn you of ALL the side affects before letting you make your final decision of getting it placed. My experience with the copper IUD was horrible, and I do not recommend it to anyone.

  15. I just removed mine this morning myself, I also saw rust on my IUD. I've had it 2 years this month.it was great for the first year, then I started to get odors like rotting fish. It was to the point where nothing helped and I resorted to soft cups and baby powder and baby wipes every time I went to the restroom. I was so self conscious. Plus my periods went from 5 days to 3weeks!! I got sick of it so I took it out myself. Our clinic closed and the OBGYN charges 200 for removal... No pain at all. I'm glad its out. I feel free!!

  16. Thank you for sharing you guys. When I removed my Paragard , it came out looking rusty and I told my husband about it. He said it can't possibly be, because they would not be able to put it in the market and have doctors dispensed it. So I m like ye maybe you are right , maybe this is just dry blood. So my question is why is this still on the market?? What are the harm to this corroding copper coils.?? Kinda of scary to see the rusted copper coils flaking off into your body..

But after reading these I'm having it removed asap! I've experienced all of these symptoms for so long I thought that it was just the ageing process, I'm 53 yrs old now and am afraid of what it's going to look like upon removal but looking forward to feeling better!

  19. I just pulled mine out by accident two days ago and was horrified to see that the copper parts of the iud were black from oxidization. There was also a thick yellow crusty build up all over the little plastic ball on the end. Started doing research after seeing it and am thinking now that it could be one of the best mistakes I ever made. I already suffered from fatigue and depression before getting paragard, so I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing some improvements in my health. Thanks for sharing your stories ladies!

  22. Take the shit out. Had mine ten years I pulled it out myself while on my period. Cervix was soft I found the strings and that rusty corroded bitch came out with barely any coils. So much Pain PAin pain PAIN. Why can't they make birth control for Dick?? Women suffering so they can't get pregnant. If you can help it don't get Paragard that bitch will make you suffer especially after having sex and if your partner ejaculates inside you. Heavy bleeding clots pain cramps inflammation in your uterus to your back down your legs headaches anemia. Trying ibuprofen iron b12 to keep your bleed count up. Copper poisoning. Shit the doctors don't know and won't tell you. Hair loss brittle nails nervousness depression weight gain dispite hormone free your hormones do change and you will eat more because of the blood loss. Sometimes you might have a metallic taste in your mouth and YES YES YES you vagina will smell and there will be clots. I have a picture of my copper iud I got after I had my son. Iud inserted in 2008 I pulled it out 04/17/2018 by myself you can do it when your period is on because your cervix is soft and there is no pain. Just wash your hands before you do it. My body feels so much better. I can sleep with no hot flashes no crampy feeling in my body. I'm on my menstrual and I have no cramps bleeding has slowed down by at least 50% but I'm thinking that the iud was in so long that my body has to detox the remnant of the iud copper particials that broke off. Please don't get this have your man get a vasectomy if possible. I'm going to try vaginal films for now until I find something better or until my boyfriend get his vasectomy. Good luck ladies.

    2. Your personal account and others have validated how I've been feeling. It's officially been 10 years since I've had paragard inserted. Now I want it out! Symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and hair loss started in the first. Hair loss stopped, but the heavy cycles remained. I brushed it off. Over the years I've also experienced extreme fatigue, brain fog, post intercourse bleeding and weight gain (35 pounds). I was told that my body is changing as I'm getting older. By the way I'm 37. My concerns about pragard have been casually dismissed by medical professionals. Now I have new symptoms such as a fishy/metallic odor, abdominal bloating that won't go away and mystery abdomen pains. After researching "side effects of paragard" I'm convinced that this device has been the cause of all my problems and I stupidly ignored the signs. Ladies trust your instincts and do the research yourselves. From now on I won't just rely on the word of my doctor.

My fiance offered to get a vasectomy so we could get the copper IUD removed so as soon as he got that done I went and got it removed and every since then my vagina smells lovely and no yeast infections!!! I'm so relieved after 10 f'n years !! I went to countless doctors for my situation and I would say "do you think the IUD could be causing this?" All of then said "oh no, I definitely wouldn't say the IUD could be a factor" BS! Of I would have know this a long time ago I wouldn't have kept that disgusting thing in so long!

The constant yeast infections, odor and sharp pains that come out of nowhere. I hated to be around people, go anywhere or do anything. I got mine placed 5 years ago after having my daughter. I would say this past year has been HELL for me! Omg I can’t stand it. Always in the doctor office for the same thing. Soooo embarrassing! I literally just thought about the iud causing the problem. I am calling my doc to get this taken out. This is literally ridiculous!

  29. I just had my paragard removed after 9.5 years. The last week was excruciating with cramps so I told doctor I wanted it out. Much of the copper coil had corroded off. For the last year I've experienced pelvic achiness and tingling pains down my legs. I had a clear liquid discharge but never associated it with the iud. I hope things improve now that it's out.

  30. I have literally had Paragard for about 7 months now after getting pregnant while on the pills (not because they didn’t work but because I was too lazy to take them) and this thing sucks! It has caused my periods to be week long fiascos when I am used to a 3 day breeze. My partner is very well endowed and always complains of being poked even after I’ve had the strings shortened. And the cramps are constant even when my period isn’t on! I have been dealing with an old rusty smell when I urinate and wipe and after reading yall’s testimony I am planning to get this thing taken out of me ASAP!!! I don’t see how women deal with this for so long! Thanks for everyone’s insite.

  31. YES, YES, YES!!!
My IUD was black when it was removed last Thursday. I had it for five years and all five of those years I've experienced every vaginal infection, none STD related, that a person can think of including candida. Constipation was another symptom I experienced, which seems to be a none issue since removal...
I also read that it may have been the cause of my acne and a slew of other symptoms.
Thank you, Thank you for posting your experience. It's nice to know someone had the exact same experience as I had.
Are you being seen by a lawyer? I've heard of class action law suits for broken IUDs, but none for black IUDs and chronic infections.

  32. Omg I am so glad I have read this! I've has the Paraguard copper IUD for the last 4 years. This past week since my last menstrual cycle I've had this horrible burning pain, I thought I had a UTI. Come to find out, I checked my strings, and found that I could feel the whole bottom portion of my IUD! Boy was I freaked out. It being a Saturday I couldn't get in anywhere to get it removed. Ended up watching some videos and doing some reading, and pulled that sucker out. The bottom third of the coils are gone, and the rest is white and black. Not copper! Not to mention I have also dealt with a constant fishy odor, but nothing would ever fix it. I'm sooo glad to have read this, and now that it is removed I'm hoping that everything goes back to normal. Cant believe I'm just finding this out now, but so glad that things should be getting better now that I have taken it out.

  33. I have had this thing since August of 18. I have ZERO options for birth control left because I am allergic to hormones. I have never experienced an odor of any kind, but I have had an astronomical amount of yeast infections. Randomized bleeding and vaginal irritation that won't go away!! I tried time and time again explaining to my doctor that my body does not like Paraguard and they roll their eyes and say the problems would come either way. Sex? Whats that?!? I haven't had normal sex since I got this thing. I'm so relieved reading this thread!! I am NOT crazy. A foreign body does NOT belong in the uterus just like I suspected!!!

  34. I can agree...on my second IUD, first one caused chronic yeast infection and discharge. Second IUD was inserted in August...in November awful fishy smell came and has not left, had 3 BV infections over the past 2 months. Taking it out today. Husband will have to wear condoms until other birth control methods are researched. Im 44 done with having children!

  35. Omg I wish I would have found this before I opted for the paraguard since my oncologist recommended I have to stop using the nuva ring due to +estrogen receptors in a mass that was found. Anyhow, I've only had it placed 2 weeks ago and I want it out already. The odor and discharge is too much. I've never dealt with that with the uva ring. I can't deal with having these problems constantly. I dont think I'll give it more than a few months if this continues. I'm 40 and have 2 teenagers just cut my tubes.

  36. I'm getting my rusted iud out today, I found pieces of coils in my vagina. I've had it for 10 years. I'm terrified the copper remaining in my uterus will prevent me from getting pregnant. Does anyone have any info on this? Successful pregnancies after corroded iud removal? Doctors are in denial. I am absolutely furious that I was told this was safe. Now I know the reason behind repeated BV infections and chronic pain. My heart goes out to all of you. Any info is greatly appreciated.
